Corneal Transplants

Corneal transplantation (or penetrating keratoplasty) is a procedure that replaces the host’s damaged or diseased cornea with a donor’s cornea. The steps for this procedure are relatively simple. Dr. Hannush traces a graft from the donor’s corneal tissue and attaches it directly in place of the host’s cornea. As is the case with most surgeries that involve the entire corneal membrane, it takes several months to fully recover from the procedure. On the positive side, as with LASIK, a patient can be fully functional within the first few days after the procedure.

DSAEK

Descemet’s Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK) is the latest in corneal transplantation techniques. Compared to traditional corneal transplantation, DSAEK offers a quicker recovery and potentially more visual acuity because only a smaller amount of tissue is transplanted. Because the entire membrane is not removed, DSAEK offers patients a less invasive option to traditional corneal transplantation.

Anterior Segment Reconstruction

Anterior segment reconstruction is the general name for a series of techniques used to repair damage to the pupil or iris of the eye. It is most effective when utilized in conjunction with a corneal transplantation procedure. When performed in this way, anterior segment reconstruction is thought to be the most effective way to treat severe ocular trauma and complications associated with failed surgery, disease, or injury.

Cataract and IOL Exchange

A cataract forms when the lens of the eye becomes opaque due to disease or old age. There is very little an eyecare professional can do when cataracts form other than to remove the lens entirely. In the past, this process required a long recovery period and produced only limited benefits. These negative effects were in large part due to the fact that there were few alternatives for replacing the removed lens.

With the invention and adoption of intraocular lenses (IOLs), which are synthetic lens implants that serve as replacements for excised lenses, cataract surgery has become much more effective. IOLs generally are divided into two categories: monofocal and multifocal lenses. Monofocal IOLs are designed to be focused at a set distance, whether close, intermediate, or far away from the wearer. Because of this limitation, monofocal IOL users often still need glasses in order to see things clearly at all distances. Multifocal IOL users do not have this problem because the lens is designed to focus at all three distances.

Keratoprosthesis

A keratoprosthesis is an artificial cornea that is usually generated from synthetic material. The advantage of choosing a keratoprosthesis rather than a donor cornea is that the patient does not have to wait for a suitable donor to be found. Keratoprostheses are usually used in extreme circumstances in which an existing corneal transplant fails or becomes diseased and it is deemed too great of a risk to perform the transplantation procedure again. In these cases, keratoprostheses can literally save a person’s vision.
